CÓRDOBA
The cheese capital
Cordoba is a city with a huge cultural and monumental legacy. Its strategic location, close to the river Guadalquivir, once navigable, and the heritage of the different peoples settled in its rich lands, have made it a privileged place. In 1994, the United Nations Cultural, Scientific and Educational Organization (UNESCO) recognized the universal importance of Cordovan historical properties, extending the title of World Heritage Site not only to the Mosque-Cathedral, but also to the entire urban area that surrounds it. In addition, in 2012, Córdoba received another distinctive: The Fiesta de Los Patios was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Finally, in July 2018, the Caliphal City of Medina Azahara has also received the title of World Heritage Site.
Therefore, Córdoba has 4 inscriptions on the World Heritage List granted by UNESCO: The Mosque-Cathedral (1984), the historical center that surrounds it (1994), the Fiesta de Los Patios (2012) and Medina Azahara (2018). In addition, like the rest of Spain, it enjoys the title of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity granted also to Flamenco (2010) and the Mediterranean Diet (2013).
CÓRDOBA
A province to savor
To talk about Cordoba is to make it from extra virgin olive oil, but also from wines and vinegars and Iberians, products whose quality and excellence is protected by Protected Designations of Origin and to which are added unique and special flavors such as garlic, melon, orange, chickpea, cheese, bread, quince, sweets or distillates. A combination that is enriched with the typical smells of Holy Week and Christmas in Cordoba.
The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba — the most famous monument in the city, a mixture of Islamic and Christian architecture. It deserves to book the entrance in advance.
The Alcazar of the Christian Kings — a fortified palace with beautiful gardens, ideal for walking in soft autumn light.
The Roman Bridge and the Calsava Tower — panoramic walk over the Guadalquivir River.
The Puerta de Almodóvar — one of the oldest medieval gates in Cordoba.
La Juderia (Jewish Quarter) — narrow streets, courtyards with flowers and perfect corners for walking.
Plaza del Potro — a classic Cordoban with history and quiet atmosphere.
Julio Romero de Torres Museum — collection of the great Cordoban painter, ideal for cooler days or if it rains.
Botanical Garden and natural environment — in November the autumn colors and the weather make it very pleasant to walk.
Medina Azahara — spectacular archaeological ruins, and with fewer tourists in November is perfect to explore.
